Cataract Surgery : 15 Patients Operated

This was during a 5-day campaign that took place at the Douala General Hospital.
About 15 patients diagnosed with cataract were successfully operated on using the new phacoemulsification technology. Phacoemulsification, or phaco, is a cataract surgery procedure that uses ultrasound energy to emulsify the eye's internal lens and replace it with an intraocular lens implant, or IOL. The campaign, which took place at the Douala General Hospital from November 18 to 22, was part of the World Sight Day activities commemorated last October and was also intended to transfer technology and skills from a team of doctors from the Luz Association in France.
For five days, the team of experts made up of Dr. D'amalric Olivier, ophthalmic surgeon, Marseille, Dr. Kluse Jaffre Leontine, Dr. Le Goff Laurent and a technical team worked with Dr. Touna Mama Christiane, head of the ophthalmology unit at the Douala General Hospital and local medical technicians. With this transfer of technology, the local team is expected to perform the phacoemulsification surgery. Reasons why the Head of Ophthalmology Unit at the Douala General Hospital, Dr. Touna Mama Christiane said the training will enable them to carry out the operations effectively with little or no challenge. She added that the Phacoemulsification surgery is more effective with better results compared to the old type of surgery. For her, the Douala General Hospital cannot be left behind in terms of medical technology. She added that all members of her team were present throughout the training and have gained tremendous skills, which was evident when the 15 patients were operated on by the local team.
