The Catholic Archdiocese of Bamenda has officially announced a landmark event that promises to be a spiritual and social turning point for the North West Region. In a formal communique issued on April 2, 2026 by Monsignor William Nibi, the General Coordinator Pope’s Visit to the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province, he recalled that His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV, will undertake his first Apostolic Visit to the African continent. Since his election in May 2025, with a trip to the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province.

Significant Overtones
The visit, scheduled for Thursday, April 16, 2026, is being framed not merely as a religious ceremony, but as a vital intervention for a region that has endured nearly a decade of hardship. Archbishop's office noted that the visit carries "significant overtones," specifically referencing the nine years of armed conflict Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province has navigated and continues to face.

Vision For The Future
The expectations for April 16, 2026 are high. The Archdiocese hopes that by "storming heaven with prayers" in one voice, the visit will catalyze a transition where "all activities in every sector of our livelihoods may return to normal." As the successor of Saint Peter, Pope Leo XIV’s presence is viewed as a vessel for "glad tidings" that the people of Bamenda have long sought.
The event concludes a period of intense preparation and serves as a testament to the resilience of the Bamenda Ecclesiastical Province as it prepares to welcome the global head of the Catholic Church.

A Shepherd’s Mission For Peace
The central theme of the Holy Father’s visit is "Peace and Justice," a message deeply rooted in the current needs of the Cameroonian people. According to Monsignor William Nibi, the Pope comes in his capacity as a "Shepherd who cares for the sheep," anxious to see a return to normalcy in every sector of livelihood.
The highlight of the day will be a massive outdoor Holy Mass for Peace and Justice at the Bamenda International Airport, Bafut. The choice of the location is symbolic, serving as the gateway to the region and a space large enough to accommodate the thousands of faithful expected to attend. Organizers have drawn parallels to the Biblical resurrection, noting that the Pope's first word to the region will mirror Christ’s first words to his Apostles: "Peace be with you."

A Day Of Devotion
The Holy Father is expected to touch down at the Bamenda International Airport at 11:00 AM, arriving from Cameroon’s capital, Yaounde. Upon arrival, he will immediately depart for a motorcade journey to Saint Joseph’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Big Mankon, Bamenda.
Following this initial greeting, the focus will return to the airport grounds. The public is invited to begin taking their seats at the airport as soon as the Pope departs for the Cathedral. The formal Holy Mass is scheduled to commence at exactly 3:15 PM.
