Mobilisation: Massive, Euphoric Crowds Salute Pope Leo

Cameroonians from all walks of life gathered along major roads and ceremonial grounds to give the Holy Father a befitting stay in the country

With songs, dancing and the beat of drums from across the nation, Cameroonians of every age, faith and walk of life gathered to give Pope Leo XIV a fitting welcome and farewell in the country known as “Africa in miniature”. From Yaounde, in the Centre Region, to Bamenda in the North West Region and Douala in the Littoral Region, the joy on people’s faces was unmistakable as they celebrated the Holy Father’s presence amongst them. Even those living outside the three regions visited by the Pope made special efforts to mark his time in the country. The four-day Apostolic Visit of Pope Leo XIV to Cameroon was, by all accounts, marked by an unprecedented nationwide mobilisation, transforming a three-city itinerary into a moment of joy, unity and prayer for peace across all ten regions. Whether at Nsimalen International Airport in Yaounde, Bamenda Airport and Saint Joseph’s Cathedral, Japoma Stadium and Saint Paul Catholic Hospital in Douala, or later at the Catholic University in Yaounde and the concluding Pontifical Mass at the Air Force Base, the nationwide mobilisation ensured that no region was left out, as the population turned out in their millions joyfully to acclaim the Holy Father. Wherever the Pope was present, the atmosphere was one of joy, filled with singing, dancing and the waving of both Cameroon and Vatican flags. Jubilant crowds lined up the streets in each of the three towns the Holy Father visited, wearing colourful fabrics bearing his image. Many camped overnight on the ceremonial grounds, not merely to see the Pope but also to receive his blessings. Under the scorching sun, millions of Cameroonians joined Pope Leo for the openair Masses. Whilst some walked hundreds of miles to attend the Divine Liturgy, others pushed family members and loved ones in wheelbarrows. According to Vatican News, Pope Leo XIV’s visit to Cameroon drew the largest crowd of his Africa tour. The crowds were consistently described as massive and enthusiastic, both on arrival and departure.
