Overcoming Complex Obstacles

Delegates of the 16th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti- Corruption Agencies in Africa are examining challenges to addressing the cankerworm.

Within the framework of the 16th Commonwealth Regional Conference of Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa which began on May 4 and ends this May 8, 2026 under the theme, “Deploying Artificial Intelligence in the Fight Against Corruption in Commonwealth Africa,” the stakes of the meeting are high. Member countries are faced with several challenges in the fight against corruption. Nevertheless, there are individual and collective efforts in eradicating the vice in the society. Actions of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (CONAC) in Cameroon cannot be undermined. Similar institutions in Commonwealth-member African countries are equally rolling out strategies against corruption. Despite these efforts, the cankerworm persists. Some institutions charged with the responsibility fighting corruption are not fully empowered. In some cases, the institutions cannot prosecute those said to be involved in corruption-related actions after investigations. To an extent, this limits their powers as some have described them as a toothless bulldog that barks and cannot bite. In addition to this is the challenge of insufficient legal enforcement. The absence of a clearly outlined anticorruption law restricts the effective and efficient functioning of institutions engaged in the fight against corruption. Complex financial crimes that exceed domestic legal capabilities is another challenge being faced by these anti-corruption institutions that will be meeting in Yaounde to explore better combat mechanisms.
