Legislators Pay Homage

Various tributes honoured the memory of Senator Marcel Niat Njifenji, pioneer President of the Senate.

Solemn and emotional was the parliamentary honours ceremony to late Senator Marcel Niat Njifenji who died on April 11, 2026. The national flag on the casket and giant screens displaying, in images, the life of deceased between 1934 and 2026. The event was chaired by the Senate President, Aboubakary Abdoulaye, representative of the Head of State. Various tributes paint the departed as a man of discipline who was loyal in his duties and contributed enormously to nation building. Honours from the Senate President read by the Vice President, Robert Nkili notes that he was a great mobiliser and laid a solid foundation for the Senate. As pioneer President, the tribute notes that he led the institution with honour and integrity, adequately representing the Head of State where need be and ensuring the Senate carried out its mission of consolidating democracy through the voting of laws and controlling government action. According to the tribute, he was an example to be copied by many. For the Chief Whip of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), Badel Ndanga Ndinga, the country has lost a major figure. “With his death, we have lost an institutional memory, a voice of wisdom and equilibrium. Parliament has lost an icon and each of us has lost an elderly person,” he said. The Chief Whip said they are however comforted by the fact that they benefitted from his experience at the Senate. Besides being an astute politician, Senator Badel Ndanga Ndinga said he was equally an established entrepreneur. To the family of the deceased, who spoke through the voice of Jean Daniel Niat, God on April 11, 2026 called home a courageous man who has contributed to the history of Cameroon and impacted the lives of Cameroonians. “Dear papa, the family that you led with so much love has so much admiration for you and cherish your memory.
