Urban, Interurban Transport: Accident Control System Explained

Within the framework of developing government policy on transport and road safety, the Ministry of Transport has undertaken several reforms and innovation in this domain, amongst them, the implementation of the Ym@ne Driver solution which is a centralised management and monitoring system for interurban passenger and freight transport. It is an outcome of a public- private partnership with the MTN-CAMTRACK Group. It is an intelligent and proactive solution designed to address three main risk factors for accidents including; the human being (70 per cent responsible), the vehicle (20 per cent) and the road (10 per cent) which are all contributing factors. The path covered since its implementation is what the Minister Delegate to the Minister of Transport, Njoya Zakariaou was presenting at the National Assembly on June 19, 2026 during a plenary sitting chaired by House Speaker, Theodore Datouo. He was responding to a question from Hon Toukam Tela Angèle Sandio. Giving details on the initiative, the Minister Delegate said through the use of video surveillance systems and on-board sensors, the Ym@ne Driver solution anticipates and prevents road traffic accidents by flagging risky driver behaviour and accident- prone areas through system alerts and 24/7 monitoring. As a result, the Minister said the Ministry of Transport succeeded in preventing 644,318 risk factors of road accidents in 2025. Going by him, amongst the risk factors identified were cases of fatigues and drowsiness while driving (30,015) mobile phone usage while driving (4,333 cases), speeding (582,319 cases) non-use of seatbelts (26,205 cases) and 1,446 cases of distracted driving. “This represents the potential number of accidents avoided on Cameroonian roads in 2025 thanks to the use of this device installed in vehicles.
