Barely given a second chance to participate, this generation of footballers brought down powerful opponents on their path to win their first-ever trophy, recording an unbeaten run.

T he Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon are the champions of Africa, clinching their maiden trophy in the competition. This his­ toric triumph came when very few expected. This is a team that ente­ red the competition by chance. They had initially been eliminated in the qualifiers by Algeria but were given a second opportunity to participate following the tournament’s expan­ sion from 12 to 16 teams. Cameroon was one of four nations added to the field thanks to their position in the world rankings. Indeed, a second chance on a silver platter. They left the country on their toes after a series of poor results in recent times. The most aching being missing the 2024 edition of the tournament and nearly did so again for 2026. Football fans are thanking the gods of the game that it did not happen. In fact, many felt it was written in the golden books that this was the nation’s moment to smile after falling in the final three times against Nigeria (2004, 2014 and 2016). 2026 was the good one. The Lionesses started with confi­ dence, topping Group D; made up of Ghana, Mali and Cabo Verde; with seven points. Then what looked like doom stared them in the face in the quarterfinals: Nigeria. But the Lionesses met that challenge with courage and determination, showing no inferiority complex, showed a strong fighting spirit and finally de­ feated their greatest nemesis. It was not over yet. Host Morocco awaited in the semi-finals. With the same determination and fighting spirit, Cameroon overcame the host to reach the final. Against Malawi, the Lionesses were clinical and se­ cured the coveted trophy. Cameroon finished the competition unbeaten, scoring eight goals and conceding two; a proof of the potency of their attack and the resilience of their defense.
