Grape Cultivation In Xianghuan: Great Poverty Alleviation Strategy

G rape cultivation in Xianghuan, a village in the city of Ningde, Fujian Province of China is the principal activity of many residents of the locality. Authorities have ex­ ploited the rich soils to cultivate the fruit which generates enormous in­ come. Grape vine cultivation in the village has grown into a thriving 30- year local industry centered around modern agricultural practices. What started as small, scattered plots has expanded into a stable local economy over the last three decades with the help of agricultural subsidies and tech­ nical training from authorities. Back in the 90s, about 10 million yuan was generated from 2,500 tons produced but today, production and income generated has steadily increa­ sed over the years. In 2025, production was estimated at 100,000 tons and 1.5 billion yuan generated. Visitors can enjoy fruit picking, pho­ tography, and educational study tours centered around more than 20 grape varieties. The grape cultivation site features high-canopy grape trellises of over six meters tall, a Grape Culture Corridor, and the Southern Grape Tech­ nology Sightseeing Garden museum space. Those cultivating the fruit focus on high-end yields, reducing chemical fertilizer use, and marketing select harvests both online and in physical markets.
