Discount Shops: Variety Available At Low Prices

Basic utensils and stationeries, amongst others, are sold at very affordable prices way below the standards set in established shops in Yaounde and other parts of the country.
A s monthly budget limits push everyday shoppers to search for cheaper alternatives, consumers are gradually changing their product choices. CT took a walk into flat-rate shops like "Bon Max: Everything for FCFA 800" or discount warehouses like SAC Cash and Carry, and saw shelves packed with goods at prices that seem to challenge standard market rates at established chains. At Bon Max, every item carries the same FCFA 800 price tag. The shelves are filled with unbranded plastic storage bowls, basic kitchen utensils, small electronics like phone charging cables, plastic hair acces sories, elementary school stationery, unbranded cosmetics, deodorants, or soaps. SAC Cash and Carry on its part focuses on stock like rice, refined vegetable oil, biscuits, beverages, detergents, paper towels, amongst others. In contrast, locally produced goods are common in DOVV or Santa Lucia shops in Yaounde. A branded 500ml bottle of French, Turkish, or Cameroonian body wash costs around FCFA 1,000 to FCFA 3,500, and a set of storage containers costs up wards of FCFA 1,000. At Bon Max, a body wash or container set of similar size costs just FCFA 800. At SAC, purchasing a 400g tin of powdered milk for kids at FCFA 3,450 drops the unit price well below the standard price of FCFA 3,600 at DOVV. While efforts to get the supermarkets’ administration to explain the reasons for this price disparities to CT were futile, an economist at the University of Buea, Dr Emelem Regina told CT that the massive difference in price comes down directly to the physical nature and origin of the products. First, these are almost never the exact same brands.
