E-commerce: Stakeholders Review Framework

A workshop to develop a national strategy on e-commerce opened in Yaounde yesterday.

Cameroon’s legal and institutional framework for electronic commerce has come under review as stakeholders in the country’s digital trade sector meet in Yaounde. The Secretary General in the Ministry of Trade, Achille Bassilekin III, officially opened the stakeholders’ workshop which is expected to end today. Participants at the workshop are examining and analysing the strenghts and policy gaps in Cameroon’s 2010 E-commerce law.

While opening the workshop, Bassilekin III said the Government is very committed to expanding the digital trade sector and opening up opportunities to stakeholders. He told there are many openings in the sector which will receive a boost with the putting in place of a national strategy on e-commerce. Bassilekin III commended the technical and financial support of The Commonwealth Secretariat.

For her part, the Trade Adviser at The Commonwealth Secretariat, Opeyemi Abebe, said while Cameroon may have a bit of infrastructural deficiency to facilitate e-commerce, the country can’t wait until all of the infrastructure is together before they start to think of a strategy to expand the scope of e-commerce. “Globally, digital trade is getting more and more important for a number of countries.
