Sustainable Development: Cameroonian Charity Wins UNESCO Prize

The Centre for Community Regeneration and Development, CCREAD Cameroon, in Buea is among three charities that won the 2016 award.

A Cameroonian charity, the Centre for Community Regeneration and Development, CCREAD Cameroon, based in Buea in the South West Region, is among this year’s winners of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, UNESCO-Japan Prize for Sustainable Education for Development. The announcement was made in Yaounde on September 16, 2016, by the UNESCO Multi-sectoral Regional Office for Central Africa.

Other winners named by the Director General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, were the Okayama Education for Sustainable Development, ESD Promotion Commission, Japan and the National Union of Students UK (NUS-UK), from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. CCREAD Cameroon was chosen for its project, “Integrated ESD Schemes in Schools and Communities in Cameroon,” which targets children, youth, women and indigenous groups in marginalised, remote communities.

The youth-led programme, which operates both in schools and through ESD community learning centres, helps to enhance their social, economic and cultural empowerment to reduce poverty and health threats.
