The importance of an orange campaign to end violence against women and girls was presented during a press conference yesterday.
Statistics from the UN Women bureau in Yaounde indicate that some 30 per cent of women and girls in the country are victims of one type of violence. Global figures also reveal that violence affects some 1,000 women worldwide. In a bid to advocate and support efforts to ensure comprehensive services to violence survivors, the UN Secretary General’s yearly campaign to end violence on women and girls was elaborated to pressmen during a press conference yesterday, November 21, 2017 in Yaounde. Initiated by the UN Women Cameroon, the press conference was in prelude to the official launch (Friday November 24th) of the 16 Days activism to end violence against women and girls, under the theme, “Leave No One Behind, end violence against women and girls.”
Presiding at the press conference, the Resident Coordinator of the United Nations System in Cameroon, Allegra Maria Del Pilar Baiocchi, said the day (International day for the elimination of violence against women) will be commemorated on November 25 and series of activities will take place with the media, in refugees communities, university campuses and across cities in the country during the 16 days with the need to end violence against women and girls. Since the commemoration of the day in Cameroon, the UN Resident Coordinator said they have succeeded to establish call centres and gender desks in police station through which some 20 women, who are survivors of violence visit each week.
