Violence Against Women: Children, Not Bride!

This is amongst the messages that will be brandished for the next 16 days to end violence against women and girls.

Activities to intensify the call and fight to end violence against women and girls in Cameroon and beyond was launched last Friday, November 24, 2017 in Yaounde by the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family, Abena Ondoa Marie Therese.

The global campaign known as “16 days of activism to fight violence against women and girls” holding under the theme; “leave no one behind, end violence against women and girls”, runs from November 25th to December 10th.

2014 startling statistics from the National Institute of Statistics presented during the launch revealed that at least 11 per cent of women involved in the survey were married before the age of 15; 13 per cent of those between 20 to 29 years had suffered the same fate, 36 per cent were married before the age of 18; 31 per cent suffered physical violence, 14 per cent had suffered sexual violence while 47 per cent emotional violence.

According to Minister Abena Ondoa Marie Therese, this has led to injuries, disabilities, lost of self-esteem and human dignity as well as disruption regarding their education and socialisation of children. While underlying the government’s action in order to guarantee the respect of women’s human rights in the society, the Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family stressed that all parties, particularly regional delegations of Women’s Empowerment and the Family should carry activities relating to the theme and in collaboration with specialised technical units in a bid to expose and end violence on women and gi...
