Fishing Conflicts In Ma’an Subdivision : MINEPIA Presents Measures Taken

The Minister was responding to oral questions at the National Assembly on April 1, 2022.
The locality of Nyabisan in Ma’an Subdivision of the Ntem Valley Division in the South Region unfortunately had a conflict between fishermen of other tribes and indigenous fishermen from March 5 to 6, 2022 and which led to the regrettable death of two fishermen of the locality. Hon. Mengue Mezui Germain therefore sought to know from the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industry, Dr. Taiga, what measures have been taken to ensure that peace, law and order are maintained in that part of the country which has attracted more fishermen following the construction of the Memve’ele dam.
Minister Taiga in his response presented measures taken by the government to control the situation and improve fish farming in Cameroon. Amongst the measures Dr. Taiga highlighted are, the sensitisation of the fishing community, numeric censors and identification of fishermen of other tribes and indigenous fishermen, structuring of fishermen and the putting in place of a regulatory structure, and the training of fishermen on the management of fishing units as well as the official handing over of their support and fishing rights to fishermen at the end of the suspension period (May 2022).The Minister added that local fish production...
