2012-2022 : Complete Implementation Of Decentralisation Institutions

The last ten decades in the history of Cameroon have been marked by the complete putting in place of all constitutional provisions geared at accelerating the decentralisation process in Cameroon. A chronology of events indicates the creation of the Senate, the Constitutional Council, Regional Councils and Special Status for the North West and South West Regions. 
The Constitutional Council whose members were appointed by a presidential decree on February 7, 2018 after its creation by the April 21, 2004 law. Section 46 of the Constitution defines the said institution as the competent authority as regards constitutional matters. It rules on the constitutionality of laws and oversees the functioning of institutions. This regulatory organ reigns supreme in the domains of competence and focuses among others on the constitutionality of laws, treaties and international agreements. As proof of its democratic process, the Council has received and ruled on petitions ranging from elections (presidential, senatorial and legislative) to the mandate of General Managers, whom the petitioner esteemed have outlived their legal stay and praying the Court to rule for the amendment of certain texts governing legal institutions. 
Cameroon has within the same period (last decade) witnessed the putting in place of the Senate and the organisation of two senatorial elections. The first elections were convened by President Paul Biya on February 27, 2013 which took place on Sunday April 14, 2013. Cameroonians through an indirect suffrage went to the pools and elected 70 Senators from all ten regions of the country. The remaining 30 seats were appointed by the President in accordance with existing regulations.
