DR Congo : Belgian King In Kinshasa

The visit which is the first since he became Monarch will also take him to Lubumbashi and Bukavu.

Belgium’s King Philippe is in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), two years after he offered a landmark apology for the “wounds of the past” and crimes committed under Belgium’s colonial rule. The six-day trip has been hailed as “historic” and an opportunity for the two countries to forge closer ties. On arrival in the capital Kinshasa on Tuesday, June 7, 2022, the King and Queen Matilda were given a red carpet reception by President Felix Tshisekedi, wife and population. The royal couple is accompanied by the Prime Minister, Alexander De Croo and other members of cabinet. 
According to the Congolese government, the Belgian delegation during their stay will meet President Tshisekedi to discuss the colonial past as well as current political relations between the two countries. Congolese government spokesman Patrick Muyaya told reporters that Belgium and the DRC are into a “new partnership” era. “We are not forgetting the past, we are looking to the future,” he said.
