Managing Regional, Local Authorities : Effective Control, Support Mechanisms Deliberated

Senators have been edified on the appropriate control and support instruments to regional and local authorities in the decentralisation process. This was during the 16th exchange forum between the Senate and the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court on November 23, 2022 on the theme, “Management of Regional and Local Authorities: The responsibility of the actors and the role of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court.” Deliberations also featured the presentation of the annual report of the Audit Bench of the Supreme Court for 2018/2019. The exchange forum was presided at by the Vice President of the Senate, Laurent Nkodo who said the meeting, like others, permits Senators to acquire necessary knowledge which is an asset for them to carry out their functions. The legal framework for accountability, actors subject to accountability and recommendations on improving collaboration were subjects discussed. 
Access to information, the Senate Vice President noted, is indispensable for the functioning of a Parliament and control of government actions cannot be very effective without ample knowledge of financial policies. Senator Laurent Nkodo added that the theme of discussion was very important given that the Senate is an actor of decentralisation and they have a parliamentary network to that effect, and the Senate is the institutional representative of the people. According to the lawmaker, the Senate is directly involved in the decentralisation process; a policy which the Head of State since 1996 has embarked on improving. The exchange forum, he added, comes handy as the Senate is currently examining the Settlement Bill of Cameroon for the 2021 financial year.
