Chad : Transitional Council Adopts Military Status

The ordinance on the general status of soldiers of the defense and security forces, was adopted during a meeting on March 14, 2023.
The Chadian National Transitional Council (CNT) has adopted the general status of soldiers in the defense and security forces. The main objective behind the adoption of the ordinance on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 is to modernize and professionalize the Chadian forces. For the first time in the country’s history, a clear cut career plan for soldiers was presented with guidelines on how a soldier is expected to move from the bottom up to the hierarchy. The unanimous decision, lays to rest the incessant debate concerning the non-existent of career profile for soldiers and the domination of soldiers from a particular clan in the country.
Unlike in other countries, promotion in Chad’s military which is one of the most trained in Africa, is frequent among the senior ranks than the junior. Every year, the number of generals increases. This increase triggers an automatic financial hike for the country in terms of housing, water, electricity, car and a salary for each general estimated at millions of CFA francs. According to one of the advisers of the CNT, Takilal Ndo-lassem, “The army of Chad is an army with an inverted pyramid. We have more generals than Nigeria. We have almost 400 generals, 300 of whom come from the same clan. Each general enjoys exorbitant advantages,” he added.
