Transferring Finances To Councils, Regions : Stakeholders Review Practical Modalities

Modalities on the transfer and distribution of financial resources (taxes included) to decentralised authorities have been reviewed in Yaounde. This was on April 5, 2023 during an extraordinary session of the Committee on Local Finances, chaired by the Minister of Decentralisation and Local Development, George Elanga Obam, who doubles as President of the said Committee. The objective of the session was to examine the problem of the distribution of finances to Councils and Regions. 
Decentralisation Minister said they are trying to improve parameters of consideration in the distribution of such resources. “We are meeting because we want to modify the way that we are giving finances to local and regional authorities. What we have been doing was specially based on the population. And with the help of the World Bank, we think we can modify it a little bit to preserve social justice and to improve the development of our territories. We think it is not only the population that should be the basis of the sharing of resources, but we can also take into consideration the level of development of territories, surface area and so on,” the Minister stated.
