Peace And Development : South West Elite Traces Development Path
At a regional forum held in Buea, the Over 1,000 participants earmarked key areas of sustainable development.
The South West Regional elite meeting in Buea from 12 through 13 May, 2023 has called on the Government to enable the rehabilitation of existing energy sources of the Region such as the former Yoke Powercam. Equally, they resolved for the identification and exploitation of other hydro energy sources like the Lebialem Waterfall and other falls existing in the Region to curb the energy crisis now plaguing the area.
As a development forum initiated by the Regional Assembly, the elite expressed a strong concern about the security of the area calling on the sons and daughters of the Region to give peace a chance for development projects to be carried on. The elite underscored that development has no colour and remains useful for every person who comes across it. The delegates at the Buea Peace and Development Forum called for the revival of abandoned District Hospitals of the Region due to the current socio-political crisis affecting the English-speaking part of Cameroon.
The elite of the Region were equally worried that most of their children were not being admitted into professional higher institutions of the country including IRIC, ENAM, University of Buea Faculty of Health Sciences, the Higher Teacher’s Training Colleges, the Higher Police School, EMIA and the National Polytechnique. The forum also made a clarion call for the improvement of the road network in the Region to enable the transportation of produce from farms to market and to ease up movement across the six administrative Divisions of the South West Region. They further called for the creation of a “second Chance” educational system as remedy for school dropouts which is on the rise due to the current socio-political crisis.
The distribution of fuel and its high cost were equally identified by the forum as a major area of concern. with a strong call for constant fuel supply at more affordable prices in the region especially as the fuel refinery SONARA, is based in the South West Region.
