National Assembly : Defence Bill, Ordinance Tabled

Lawmakers received the legal documents on June 21, 2023 during a plenary sitting.

Two bills have been tabled at the National Assembly for scrutiny during a plenary sitting chaired by the Senior Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Hilarion Etong on June 21, 2023. They include the bill to authorise the President of the Republic to ratify the defence and security cooperation framework agreement between the government of the Republic of Cameroon and the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt, signed in Yaounde on October 11, 2022, and the Ordinance of June 2, 2023 to amend and supplement some provisions of the Finance Law of Cameroon for this financial year. Prior to the plenary sitting was a Chairmen’s Conference presided at by the House Speaker, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril that deemed the document admissible to the House Chamber for consideration. 
The first bill on security cooperation is in line with Cameroon’s strategic policy of diversifying its defence partnership and consolidating bilateral relations with Egypt by extending it to the military sphere. Renewed areas of cooperation in the agreement include military training, exchange of experts, technicians and professionals in various military fields, exchange of military intelligence, justice, medicine and industry as well as electronic and communication systems. Documentation on the agreement states that it will be implemented through specific arrangements and implementation programmes. Ratifying the agreement will thus further enhance exiting fruitful cooperation ties between the two countries who recently held the first session of the Joint Defence Commission responsible for monitoring the implementation of the framework agreement.
