Crusading against cybercrimes : 42 Youth Trained In Buea

42 Youth Trained In Buea 31 boys and 11 girls from the South West Region rounded off a seven-week creative training, last Saturday in Buea, to code and build robots.

Patronised by the Cameroon Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (P&T or French acronym MINPOSTEL), a holiday tech-camp, to train kids and teenagers on ICTs building, cybercrimes alert and protection from social media malice, was conducted in the South West regional capital, Buea, from 4 July through 19 August, 2023. As a holiday activity, the kids and teens between seven and 17 years were grouped into three levels of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) standards. Experts in ICTs from the P&T’s partner, NERVTECK, drilled the youth on robotics, programming, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, cybersecurity, 3D modeling and drone piloting.
Mfuh Winfred, Technical Adviser Number One at the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, sat in for the Minister, to chair the closing of the seven-week training dishing out praises to parents who supported their children to attend the elevating exercise. He explained that it was high time young people in Cameroon began seeing into the future with ICT technological advancement.
The exercise was a wing of the on-going national campaign patronised by the Minister of P&T, Minette Libom Li Likeng, to build innovative capacity in the youth, prepare them for tomorrow’s uplifting technologies and promote cybersecurity. The Buea workshop became a crowd puller as attendees marveled at the performances of the participating kids and teens. Parents and curious observers filled the Buea Mountain Hotel conference room for the closing ceremony. They were amazed at the capabilities of the youngsters in manipulating electronic devises and creating software for solutions to local needs like powering homes with solar energy, creating an automatic toll gate, and piloting robots. The P&T Ministry has been on many fronts recently to popularise the use of ICTs, narrow the gap between users of urban, semi-urban and rural settings, among teenagers and street children.
