Social Media Regulation : African Partners To Uphold Cardinal Values

This is one of the recommendations at the just-ended forum on the challenges of digital platforms.
Members of the media regulatory authorities of the African Communication Regulatory Authority Network (ACRAN) have decided to increase their monitoring actions with the view to establish an ongoing think-tank between ACRAN and digital platforms. This is in a bid to promote best practices in the regulation of social media content, in compliance with national and international laws. The declaration was made yesterday, November 9, 2023 in Yaounde, at the end of an international forum organised by the National Communication Council (NCC) and ACRAN, on the theme, “The challenge of social media regulation: modalities of collaboration between African media regulators and digital platforms.”
While reading the closing declaration, the Representative of the National Broadcasting Commission (HCC) in Nigeria, Mrs Onyinoyi Aiyetan, who is also the Director in charge of Radio-diffusion Monitoring in the country, said cognisant of the dangerous ramifications resulting from disinformation through digital platforms and the necessity for a common regulatory approach to social media content, henceforth ACRAN will be keen on tackling common issues and challenges relating particularly to social media regulation, media literacy and the fight against disinformation, hate speech, child protection and vulnerable groups.
