Cameroon-China: Strategic Partners


The facts are evident and there are equally prospects as concerns cooperation between Cameroon and China that were established some 53 years ago. The official visit to Cameroon of the Chinese Vice Prime Minister, Liu Guozhong is thus another opportunity to further strengthen these ties that have been mutually beneficial to the two parties. From the energy, health, infrastructure, education, to agriculture and transport sectors, can be found some Chinese funded projects. 
In the energy sector, China supports Cameroon in the process of the construction of dams to ensure regular electricity supply.  Through a loan agreement, the Eximbank of China provided FCFA 21,905 billion for the financing of the project for the construction of the central hydroelectric dam of Mekin in the South Region.  The Memve’ele dam in the same region is another project that has benefitted Chinese financial assistance to the tune of FCFA 243 billion. 
Other assistance in the form of gifts or subvention offered China to Cameroon are evident in projects like the Lagdo hydroelectric dam in the North Region, the Yaounde Conference Centre, the construction of the government primary school in Mvomeka’a, South Region, construction of the Yaounde Multipurpose Sports Complex, and the Gynecology, Obstetrics and Pediatrics hospitals in Yaounde and Douala. The new structure of the National Assembly of Cameroon is being financed and constructed by the Chinese.
