Promoting Peace, Social Cohesion : Victoria United Dedicates Trophy To Course

The champions of the MTN Elite One Championship on April 23, 2024 presented their trophy to Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute, noting that they are using football as a unifying factor.
The champions of the MTN Elite One Championship for 2023-2024, Victoria United, have presented their trophy to the Prime Minister, Head of Government, Joseph Dion Ngute. The team and its staff who were received on April 23, 2024 was handed FCFA 10 million by the Prime Minister as a gift of encouragement. The football club stated that they are using their trophy to promote peace and social cohesions in Cameroon as a whole. Indeed, Victoria United, popularly known as “OPOPO” emerged winner of the championship after a 2-2 draw against Stade Renard of Melong at the Douala Mbappe Leppe stadium on April 18, 2024. It placed them at the top with 13 points, ahead of the aforementioned team and Coton Sports, who each had 10 points. Victoria United played a total of seven games, win four, lost two and recorded a tie in one.
Congratulating them for their victory, Joseph Dion Ngute said they have made the people of the South West Region proud, and that the feat is very timely given that it is coming at a moment when the region is gradually coming out of security challenges. “I want to congratulate you for exhibiting such prowess to arrive at this point. There are two points I will want to highlight on. Firstly, to give assurances of President Paul Biya’s desire to improve sports infrastructure in the entire country as seen in the different stadia that have been constructed nationwide,” the Prime Minister stated. He added that within the reconstruction plans of the North West and South West Regions, government has contacted companies and the brewery company, Brasseries du Cameroun will be constructing a stadium in Kumba and Bamenda. On the second point of emphasis, the Head of Government highlighted the role of football in social cohesion and promotion of peace, noting that a football match rallies everyone and no conflicts are observed on match days.
