Industrialization Drive : Gov’t Announces One Municipality-One Industry Policy

Minister Fuh Calistus Gentry made the announcement in Tiko on October 24, 2024, while visiting the FCFA 32 billion mineral water and carbonated drinks factory under construction.

Cameroon’s interim Minister of Mines, Industry and Technological Development says the industry in the country is on full expansion as the policy of import-substitution becomes a reality. Prof. Fuh Calistus Gentry was categorical that Cameroon is moving on and wants to move away from an exporter of raw materials to local transformation in order to create wealth and jobs. On this score, the acting Minister of Mines, Industry and Technology Development who was flanked by the Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai and the President of Cameroon’s Chamber of Commerce, Mines and Industry, Christophe Eken, during his field visit to Tiko, announced that his ministry has henceforth adopted the policy of “One municipality-one industry.”  To him, Cameroon has to reclaim its rightful position as an industrial giant not only in the sub-region but in the continent as a whole. 
Though some municipalities with more capacities to habour industries can do so, Prof Fuh Calistus posited that the spirit of the new policy is that in every municipality, there should be a local transformation industry to create jobs for youth. He said his ministry will work with local authorities and the Ministry of Decentralization and Local Development to make this a reality. He seized the opportunity to make a clarion call for the South West Region, which ought to be the leader in industrial development, to wake up from slumber. Minister Fuh Calistus pointed out that 70 per cent of CDC’s production should be transformed locally rather than exported as raw materials. On this note, he announced an imminent tyre production factory which will make use of the CDC rubber to produce tyres.
