Anew era of governance opens at the University of Buea (UB) with the appointment of one of Africa’s most distinguished kidney specialists to chair its Council. By Presidential Decree, Professor Gloria Enow Ashuntantang epouse Some, on Tuesday June 2, 2026 became Pro-Chancellor of UB, bringing decades of medical and academic leadership to the Anglo-Saxon university. She replaces Professor Ako Edward Oben, who died some months ago. From hospital ward to the UB Council, Professor Gloria Enow Ashuntantang is no stranger to leadership. The internationally acclaimed physician, researcher and university administrator now new Pro-Chancellor of the University of Buea is currently Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Bamenda. She is also Consultant Nephrologist at the Yaounde General Hospital and Professor of Medicine at the University of Yaounde I. Trained in Nigeria, Cameroon, and Switzerland, Prof. Ashuntantang holds an MB, BS from the University of Ibadan, a specialization in Internal Medicine from the University of Yaounde I, and an MD with specialization in Nephrology from the University of Geneva. Prof Gloria Enow Ashuntantang is the founding President of the Cameroon Society of Nephrology and was the first woman to have served as President of the African Association of Nephrology (AFRAN). Internationally, she has chaired the Africa Regional Board of the International Society of Nephrology and sits on the Executive Committee of KDIGO, the global body for kidney disease guidelines.
