Carnet diplomatique: 250,000 Cameroonians Studying Spanish Language

This was disclosed over the weekend in Yaounde at a reception to mark Spain’s National Day.

The Spanish Embassy in Cameroon on October 12, 2018 celebrated the country’s National Day, which marks the arrival in the Americas on October 12, 1492 of famous Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus. The government of Cameroon was represented at the function by the Minister Delegate to the Minister of External Relations in charge of Relations with the Commonwealth, Felix Mbayu.

The Ambassador, Ramon Maria Moreno Gonzalez, is less than a week in the country. On October 12, 2018, he was received by Felix Mbayu during which he submitted his accreditation papers. Speaking at the event, Ramon Maria said 250,000 Cameroonians now study Spanish language in the country, expressing hope that the number will keep rising. The number is made up of secondary and high school, and university students. Today, Spanish has the second highest number of speakers in the world after Chinese, he disclosed. 

Spain has enjoyed more than 50 years of ties with Cameroon. Ramon Maria expressed optimism that investments and cooperation between the two sides will be enhanced. “In addition to football, cooperation between Spain and Cameroon should be extended to other areas,” he noted. The Ambassador lauded the dynamism of Cameroonians, citing as example efforts to promote democracy. “Spain supports the rule of law in Cameroon and its democratic progress,” he remarked.
