How did you get to the Africa Union ?
Coming out of the university, I think I was very lucky to have a clear career path and the passion to venture into development communications and I was determined to succeed in this career path while I further my education and tour the world, something I love to do a lot. I entered the African Union (AU) after working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Ghana office where I served as a Communications Assistant for a year and subsequently a Communications Associate for two years. I must say these years with the UNDP were very critical to my career and contributed immensely to developing my communications career journey and grounded me with the relevant experience needed for my current role.
What is your role in the AU?
In what may feel like several years considering the enormous experiences I have gained and the impactful projects I have worked on, my role as a Communications Officer with the African Union (AU) began in November last year and I am very excited about what the future holds for me. In my current role with the AU, I work directly under the African Union Women, Gender & Youth Directorate (WYGD) where I provide strategic guidance on the communication activities of the WGYD including coordination, advocacy, and communication strategies, planning, and implementation of the activities of the Directorate.
The WGYD has a wide range of programmes we run and as such we have various volunteers and staff from diverse backgrounds who come on board with relevant technical skills we need for the project. As a Communications Officer, I tend to work with colleagues and superiors across functions to ensure we are all aligned to deliver the strategic vision of the Directorate. Working with my colleagues is a lot of fun because we get to learn a lot and can embrace our various cultures and diverse view, lately, I even find myself saying some words in other languages.
How do you evaluate your contribution to enable the AU better cater for the needs of women and children?
