11 février: Competitive Games At The Forefront

The exercise is to encourage youths develop fair-play and creative mind-sets.

Excitement best describes the ambiance at the socio-cultural village of the youth trade-fair taking place in Yaounde. Youths from all the Subdivisions in the Mfoundi Division are presently having a pleasant time through games and other socio-cultural activities at the Youth Sports Complex.
Lumiere Bessala is a Form Four student seen at the cultural village ready to participate in a reading competition. She is one of those who hardly leave home after school hours. Being at the youth cultural village, Lumiere Bessala says she is very happy to be part of an environment that offers lots of fun. “I am enjoying myself and I wish that such activities take place more often in schools”, she added. Carine Tchamba is another student from a professional youth training centre in Yaounde who will be participating in a traditional dance competition. Those undertaking scrabble competition as well as monopoly, card, arm challenge, painting and ludo could be seen focused on the games which were on-going when Cameroon Tribune (CT) visited the spot.
The Inspector of Programmes at the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Ndzo Augustine Kum says the socio-cultural activities organised by the ministry fall within the popular adage that ‘All work without play makes Jack a dull boy”. That is why according to Augustine Kum the cultural village is out to enable youth amuse themselves through different games. The ministry is out to encourage and help youths develop artistic talents in singing, dancing, poetry writing and other fields of particular interest to them. Augustine Kum says through the different competitions, the ministry wants to develop different skills and attitudes amongst youths such as hard work, endurance and perseverance. Questions and answers competitions are also geared towards encouraging youths learn about their civic duties to the nation as well as its national emblem.

“We need more events like this during national Youth Day celebrations. The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Civic Education needs to communicate more on such events because the turn out here is very timid. I wish we had many youths at the exhibition ground just as it was at the Nsimalen International Airport when the Indomitable Lions arrived with the trophy. The youth exhibition ground is more than just being champions of the world because youths are the champions for the future. From the timid turnout at the exhibition ground, it shows that lots of work still needs to be done. Youths need to wake up, but this is a good start”.
