Nigeria : Buhari Praises Anti-Corruption Fight

The President was reacting for the first time since the arrest of the EFCC boss and other officials.

President Muhammadu Buhari has said the current investigation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), boss Ibrahim Magu is an indication that Nigeria's fight against corruption is "real and active". According to a statement released through a spokesperson, the country’s President who made fighting corruption one of his main campaign promises during the 2015 and 2019 Presidential Elections, said, the suspension of the EFCC chair will enable the anti-corruption agency to continue its work, "without the cloud of an investigation over its head". 
On the importance of accountability and transparency, President Buhari said “all Nigerians must know that they are accountable before the law. He added that, “A series of documented allegations were made against the Chairman of Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Following a preliminary review of the allegations leveled against the chairman and several other members of his staff, there were grounds for a detailed investigation to be conducted”, he explained.
Hence, an investigative panel was constituted in compliance with the extant laws governing the convening of such a body. “As is the proper procedure, when allegations are made against the Chief Executive of an institution, and in this case an institution that ought to be seen as beyond reproach”. he reiterated.
