Madagascar : Cheneso Storm Destroys Major Roads

Authorities say businesses and communication have been brought to a standstill in some areas.
Businesses and communication between some major towns in Madagascar have been brought to a halt following the destruction of nine major road networks by the Cheneso Tropical Storm. Several districts of Mahajanga, in the northwest of Madagascar, have flooded as well as the roads that connect them to the capital, Antananarivo. Images widely relayed on social networks show the entire portions of bitumen washed away. Among the nine national roads that have been cut are; the R.N.4, which connects all the north and north-west of the island to the capital. Between Antananarivo and Majunga, a port city on the west coast, hard hit by the floods, was cut in four places, causing endless lines of vehicles waiting for the damaged sections to be restored or deviations recorded.
So far, more than 46,500 people have been affected. Part of Madagascar is still on red alert following the passage, Thursday, January 19, of Cheneso Tropical Storm, the very first cyclonic phenomenon of the season. Though this depression left the island on January 23, through the Mozambique Channel, its residues continue causing floods in towns and fields as well as landslides throughout the territory. On the west coast of Madagascar, three regions are still in maximum vigilance due to the risk of flooding. The southeast coast is also on alert as the expected level of rainfall is high.
