Joseph Nyumah Boakai : Seasoned Political Orator

At 78, the former vice-president popularly known as “Sleepy Joe” is a meticulous statesman with an envying track-record.

Joseph Nyumah Boakai is no newcomer to Liberian politics. He is a seasoned political orator who has described age as a “blessing”. He was born in the remote village of Worsonga in Foya, the most populous district of Lofa County in the northernmost part of Liberia on November. 30, 1944. Boakai and his wife Kartumu have four children. He is a Baptist and a deacon of the Effort Baptist Church. The 78-year-old from the Kissi ethnic group, has a rich background in public service and a distinguished career that spans several decades. Before his successful bid for the presidency, he served as Vice President from 2006 to 2018 under the administration of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected woman President. 
Boakai's experience and dedication to public service over the years have earned him widespread respect among Liberians. A Business Administration graduate from the University of Liberia in 1972, his service career commenced when he joined the Ministry of Agriculture, progressing through various positions until he attained the rank of Minister in 1983 under then-President Samuel Doe. Boakai chaired boards of more than 20 agricultural development projects in Liberia, the Agricultural Cooperative Development Bank, and support institutions.
